Dr. Jharna Pathak holds a PhD in Economics from Gujarat University (through Sardar Patel
Institute of Economics and Social Research). Beginning her research in the field of water
management, agriculture and institutions, she has developed interest in gender research. Her
current research interests include perspectives gleamed through the lens of gender within a
broader framework of rights, equity and development. Her recent studies examine the gendered
and classed experiences, interpretations and consequences of violence on women in public and
private spaces. She aims to synergise feminist theory with community action. In addition, she
teaches related courses at Gujarat University, Gandhinagar National Law University, Pandit
Deendayal Energy University and so on. She has also served as an external expert in various
academic institutions, semi government bodies and non-government organisations in varying
capacities. She has also conducted training programmes for PhD students, middle and senior
level government officers and activists in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science
Research, New Delhi, V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, Noida, UNICEF, India and
Government of Gujarat
She is one of the co-authors of the book: Community Natural Resource Management and Poverty
in India: The Evidence from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh by Sage publication, New Delhi,
(2016). She has also co-edited a volume of essays titled, Tribal Development in Western India
published by Routledge, New Delhi (2013). She has also published articles in magazines, edited
books and peer reviewed journals.
