News in brief:
This paper, a field-based empirical study in the two states of Chhattisgarh and Gujarat, examines the implementation of the Forest Rights Act and describes the ground situation with regard to the claims made by the tribals besides presenting their livelihoods status and aspirations in detail. It also tries to analyse the reasons for the condition they are in and touches upon the issues concerning the state of forest vegetation and their dependency on it. The paper concludes that the struggle for the tribals in the overall perspective is far from over and continues even after the distribution of the stretches of land under the Act.
