Young
unmarried urban women, in certain particular configurations of family
formation, are making plans for lifelong careers even when their
families are quite traditional, with mothers who never had careers or
career ambitions. Interviews with college students in Allahabad,
Mumbai, Baroda and Bangalore are the basis of the research. The
demographic and other background trends for the emergence of newly
career-oriented women are examined. Possible new shapes of family
formation are proposed.
